Recovery (Day 10)

Thankfully the today started bright and warm. I had been cosy in the sleeping bag and got a solid 8 hours sleep despite being reclined in the front seat of the truck and not in the swag.

We knew that the last 60 hours of storms had left a trail of problems behind us but we had to press on today and hope that we were now past the issues.

One of the groups of Belgian 4×4’s that we saw on the trail came past us as we were drinking our first coffee.

They had decided not to turn around on the first closed trail and had spent 4 hours digging themselves a route after getting stuck. They spent the night there after running out of day light. Hard core or bonkers!

We started the day climbing to 3500M and saw the first snow on the mountains.

4 more hours of winding up and down the valley roads, trying not to overheat brakes and make our way out of the mountains.

Occasionally green valleys appeared growing apples, the houses got a bit better and people a little wealthier.

With just 100km left the trail disappeared into a canyon. No trail left just 2 km of riverbed.

loose stones and rocks from the recent flood made the passage through the canyon tricky.

Finally made it to the campsite searching for fuel for the trucks and ourselves. An old gun battery overlooking the town now converted into a campsite.

Good food and some welcome silent darkness ahead of another day on the trails tomorrow
